UPCOMING EXHIBITION

Bloom

Claire Pringle, Cathy Smale and Lucy Sugden

6 - 14 June

bloom poster.jpg

Bloom celebrates the relationship between art and nature, with work created in garden studios and brought to the gallery this June.

Delicate fossil like impressions of wild plants on porcelain meet characterful oil paintings of plants and birds, with the study of moths and flowers captured in textile form.

Inspired by time spent in the peace and quiet of the natural world, the artists share the work that reflects the same sense of calm.

OPENING SATURDAY

6 JUNE

Claire Pringle
Claire uses ceramic techniques to capture and preserve things of beauty and importance, specifically locally found wild plants and flowers from her garden as well as domestic handicraft skills passed down through the generations. She enjoys capturing and preserving the intricate nature of plants; each fleeting petal and leaf prolonged for eternity. By pressing them into porcelain and adapting her glazes she can highlight details which are so often overlooked. Porcelain is a wonderful medium in which to capture fine details, and she enjoys how each piece conserves and highlights unexpected hidden treasures!Recently, she has been researching and learning about medicinal plants and has been growing these plants from seed to record their journeys.

Cathy Smale
Cathy’s paintings combine observation with imagination, with scenes inspired by local landscapes and woodland walks. Birds populate the canvas and bring life and character to the images. This latest collection showcases garden plants and feathered visitors, extending to the wildlife and nature nearby. Looking up to busy canopies, capturing long moments gazing skywards and listening to birdsong.Working up close to the canvas is absorbing and meditative, retreating into the calm of a studio to build shapes and patterns, while watching the hollyhocks rise and dance outside.

Lucy Sugden
Lucy’s work is rooted in a deep respect for the natural world, specifically the delicate ecosystems found within the local landscape and her own garden. For Lucy, the garden is more than a setting, it is a vital habitat and a sanctuary for observation. Her practice is inspired by the ‘quiet singing’ of translucent petals in the sunlight and the sudden glisten of an insect’s wing. By watching the changing cycles of the garden, Lucy translates the feelings of grounding and joy found in nature into tactile form. Her work invites the viewer to slow down and truly see; to catch a glint or glimmer that pulls them in fora closer look.

Working in paint and ceramics, these three artists explore their shared ground to the natural world through distinct but complementary practices.
Audrey Imber’s abstract landscapes capture the atmosphere and memory of place, drawing on both the local environment and scenes encountered while travelling.
May Cheung’s colourful, expressive paintings transform nature into vibrant abstract compositions, celebrating movement, colour, and growth.
Ceramicist Anja Penger-Onyett presents hand-thrown stoneware pieces designed for both house and garden, combining practicality with organic form.
Together, the three artists create a warm and colourful exhibition that reflects different ways of seeing and shaping nature through colour, form, and clay.
